Brief Description

The Esplanade which got its name from the Italian Spianare, is the largest Greek square. This is not just any square in the usual sense because the original configuration had defensive purposes as it was a defensive playing field between the fortress and surrounding town. The visitor walks through three different historical eras, Imperial France via Liston, the Venetian era with its imposing fortress and the British rule with the Palace.
